The Freshwater Museum – Gl. Turisten

Gl. Turisten was built in 1922 to transport tourists between Ry and Himmelbjerget. The ship has a fascinating history, first as a passenger boat (1922–1975) and later as a private leisure craft (1973–2001), before being acquired by the Freshwater Museum in 2001 under the name M/S Line. In 2004, it was renamed Gl. Turisten. Over the years, the ship has undergone continuous restoration, and in 2012 it was awarded the status of Historic Monument by the Danish Ship Preservation Fund, due to its outstanding restoration and high authenticity in relation to the period it represents — an honor only few Danish vessels have received.

Today, Gl. Turisten is owned by the Freshwater Museum Association (FVMF), while its operation is handled by the ship's guild Skibslauget Gl. Turisten.

Gl. Turisten no longer runs as a scheduled passenger boat but carries out 40 to 50 educational trips annually for school classes, sponsors, donors, and members of the Freshwater Museum Association. Thus, the ship can once again be experienced on the lakes — as a living piece of Danish cultural heritage.

Some of the ship's sponsorships allow school classes to enjoy a sailing trip with educational activities about nature and the environment in and around freshwater habitats. Gl. Turisten has dedicated teaching materials for this purpose.
