The Lake Mossø

Mossø is located in the Lake District Søhøjlandet between Skanderborg and Silkeborg and offers beautiful experiences in unique nature.

Mossø is located in the heart of Søhøjlandet, between Skanderborg and Silkeborg, and offers wonderful experiences in a distinctive and protected landscape. Covering an area of approximately 1,700 hectares and with a shoreline of about 28 km, Mossø is both the largest lake in Søhøjlandet and one of the largest freshwater lakes in Denmark.

The scenic lake is traversed on its western side by the Gudenå River – Denmark’s longest river – which runs from Tinnet Krat to Randers Fjord. Around Mossø, you’ll find forests, open meadows, and rolling hills, and the area is particularly rich in wildlife – including rare birds such as the white-tailed eagle and kingfisher.

The lake and its surroundings are ideal for outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, kayaking, and swimming. Along the lake, there are several places with access to toilets, swimming spots, and picnic tables. One of the most popular hikes runs from Klostermølle to the viewpoint Sukkertoppen – a route offering magnificent views of the lake and the surrounding hilly terrain.

There are also excellent opportunities for cycling in the area, where you can combine nature, exercise, and culture on routes that follow the shoreline of Mossø or wind through the nearby forests and small villages.

In short, Mossø is a place where you can find both peace and adventure – all year round.

There are several scenic cycling routes around and along Mossø.
