Hørning

Hørning is beautifully located right between Skanderborg and Aarhus. In the town, you’ll find a nice mix of cozy town life with good shops as well as a rich history featuring runestones, Viking finds, and a nave archive at the mill.

In Hørning, you can get an interesting glimpse into the past. The town has, among other things, a runestone and a burial chamber.

The Hørning Runestone
In 1849, a runestone dating from around 970-1020 was found on a field just outside Hørning. The runic inscription tells the story of Toke Smed, who raised the stone for Troels, who gave him gold and freedom – a rare tale of social mobility during the Viking Age. The original runestone is now exhibited at Moesgaard Museum, but in 2023 a replica was made and placed behind the old town hall.

The Viking from Fregerslev
Around the year 950, a powerful rider was buried near Hørning with his horse and fine riding equipment. The burial chamber was discovered in 2012 and excavated in 2017, with findings that testify to an important Viking Age family – contemporary with Gorm the Old and Harald Bluetooth.

Today, the story is told at Museum Skanderborg Perron1, where you can see parts of the horse’s harness.

Hørning Mill
Hørning Mill is a local landmark. The current mill from 1904 was moved to the town and inaugurated in 1975 after two earlier mills burned down. Today it is actively used by groups such as the Naverne in Hørning.

Jeksendalen – nature and water mill history
Jeksendalen is a protected meltwater valley with streams, meadows, and forest. The area has historically been shaped by watermills and industry. Today, it is a rich natural habitat where you can spot wildlife like kingfishers and white-throated dippers all year round.

Town life and shopping
The charming railway town of Hørning is close to Skanderborg and offers a relaxed shopping experience. Shops, specialty stores, and eateries gather around the central square, making it easy to find something special.
