The mergelbane Path
The path starts at Bøgedalsvej in the east and ends in Tønningsletvej in the west. During the trip you will cross path-connections to Himmelbjerget and Julsø.
The Mergelbanestien is a scenic and marked route that follows parts of the old marl railway between Bøgedalsvej in the east and Tønningsletvej in the west. Along the way, the path winds through a varied and hilly landscape in the central Danish Søhøjlandet region – with opportunities for detours on trails to both Himmelbjerget and Julsø.
The marl railway was originally built to transport marl – a lime-rich soil amendment – to the sandy fields near Christianshede. The railway operated until 1924, but today parts of the old railway track have been converted into a peaceful route for hikers and cyclists.
The trail offers forest, open spaces, and beautiful views, but some sections are quite hilly and are not suitable for strollers or those with limited mobility. However, adventurous visitors will be rewarded with exceptional nature experiences and an exciting glimpse into the area's history.
