The Gudenå path

Experience the iconic Gudenå on the newly established Gudenå path, which stretches 176 km past new shelters, outdoor areas with toilets and showers, packed lunch houses, tent sites and bridges.

The Gudenå River is Denmark's longest river, running 160 kilometres from its source near Tørring to its mouth in Randers Fjord. Along the way, the river originates from hundreds of springs and winds its way north through landscapes rich in life and history. From 2026, you can walk along the entire length of the river on the newly established Gudenå Trail.

The Gudenå path or the Danish Camino

The Gudenåstien stretches 176 km through 8 municipalities and 3 units of the Danish Nature Agency. In connection with the establishment of the path, new shelters, outdoor spaces, toilets, showers, tent sites and bridges have also been established. There are, therefore, ample opportunities for rest and overnight stays along the route if you want to try your hand at walking all or part of the route.

It is almost impossible to get lost on the route, but follow the red dots and arrows that are set up along the path, and you will be sure that you are on the right track.

The path consists of several already established and well-known routes, such as the Himmelbjergruten (52 km), which runs between Randers and Silkeborg, and the route between Voervadsbro and Emborg bridge, also known as the Gudenåstien (10 km). So if you're not quite ready to walk the entire 176 km route, you can start by tackling one of the two or just parts of the trail.

Wonderful experiences on the Path

Along the Gudenå River, in addition to wonderful natural experiences, there is ample opportunity to take a detour past some of the other wonderful experiences found in the Søhøjlandet. You can, for example, pass by Himmelbjerget, which is one of the area's most iconic places, or visit one of the area's cosy towns.

Other experiences by the Gudenå River:

On the water

If you want to get out on the water yourself, you can rent canoes, kayaks and small electric boats at the harbour in Ry. From here, you can also take the tour boat Turisten to the foot of Himmelbjerget. The Gudenå River is also perfect for a leisurely SUP trip, and you can stop at Alling Vest, a protected area with a campfire and tent site.

Return to your starting point with the Modstrømsbussen, which runs daily during the school summer holidays and on weekends in August. The bus departs from Ry in the afternoon and ends at Tørring Camping.
